"With elections coming, your church is at serious risk. "
"They will do everything in their power to intimidate ministers into silence."
"
We must fight back. For the sake of your religious liberty, I urge you
to give your immediate generous (and still tax-deductible!) online
donation to the ACLJ."
Oh my, it's election season; so it's time to scare the base!
Above are just a few quotes from a fund-raising email sent by Jay Sekalow of the right-wing American Center for Law and Justice to promote the the darling of the religious right, the Houses of Worship Free Speech Restoration Act.
What is this Houses of Worship Free Speech Restoration Act all about? According to Sekalow it's about a law that would "protect our pastors' constitutional right of free speech."
That's bullshit.
It's really about changing tax laws to permit churches, temples, mosques,
synagogues and other houses of worship to endorse political candidates. It's really about the intermingling of politics and religion. It's really about further dismantleing the
wall of separation between church and state. That is what it's really about.
It's a no brainer, really. "For the sake of our religious liberty" (as Sekalow would put it), we must oppose, not support, the Houses of Worship Free Speech Restoration Act.
