OK, I'm not a Bible-thumpin', church-goin', God-fearin', Jesus-lovin' guy. I guess I'd be considered a secular humanist, aka, atheist. But I will fight on the side of any Christain whose rights have been violated. Maybe you could say I'm an ACLU progressive?
Anyway, in the Washington Post today, an article describes how a 12 year-old girl in Laurel, VA, who liked to read her Bible during lunch, was forbidden by the school's vice principal to do so. And If she didn't stop reading the Bible during lunch she would be punished.
Now that's total bullshit. A 12 year-old girl can't read a book of her choosing, during a time in which students are supposed to be able to read appropriate books of their choosing. Does this mean the Bible is an inappropriate choice. For me? Hell yes. But that's my choice. For the little girl? Hell no. It's her choice to read the Bible. And that should be that.
The girl's mother has filed a law suit in U.S. District court alleging the vice principal violated the girl's civil rights. Well, this should be a slam dunk for the girl and her mother. Her rights were violated. The law is clear on this.
This kind of bullshit from the over-bearing secularists add fuel to the already blazing bonfire of victimization claimed by the religious right. And it also drives into the arms of Republicans, voters who might otherwise vote Democratic if the party was more vocal in speaking out against actions like those of the girl's vice principal.
Now if only I could encourage the girl to read Edith Hamilton's Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes instead of the Bible. The Greek myths are waaaay better than the Bible myths.
